I have been to many, many festivals in my lifetime, starting with Knebworth in the UK in 1979 where Led Zeppelin were headlining. But one has still evaded me and that is the fantastical and truly amazing, or perhaps that should be ablazing, Burning Man. It’s my burning ambition to get there one day. The festival is held every year from the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September at Black Rock City, a temporary community erected in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. It’s roots go back to the summer solstice of 1986 when Larry Harvey and his friends built a woooden man and set light to it on Baker Beach in San Fransico.

It is a not-for-profit organisation and it’s policy is always to leave no trace, as if it has never been there. In fact every effort is made to leave the land in a better state than it was in before.

And of course we can’t forget the fires. The first wooden man burnt on Baker Beach in ’86 stood at 8 foot high. Now the man has reached giddy heights, the highest being 105 feet (32 metres) in 2014.
